History/Background
Redemption originated from Latin. The meaning of redemption is pretty straight forward: "re" is an extremely common used prefix in Latin meaning "again" or "back" and "emere", which is also a Latin word, means "to buy" or "to deserve". If we put these two parts together, the word "redemption" essentially means "pay again " or "gain again".
According to Dictionary.com, the fifth definition of redemption perfectly matches the meaning here, which is "repurchase, as something sold". For the first four definitions, redemption is highly related to rescue and sin. In Christian teaching, the definition of redemption is "the act of delivering from sin or saving from evil".
Obviously, the Christian definition of redemption is more specific and is focused on salvation and rescue from sins. Christians believe that originally, people were the followers of God. They were not separated from God. Therefore, there was no sin in the world which meant that there was no need for people to be redeemed. However, once people sinned, lost, and/or rebelled, that meant they were separated from God and were in need of redemption to be able to reconcile with God.
